Underarm sweat reduction treatments aim to reduce excessive sweating (known as hyperhidrosis) in the underarm area. Hyperhidrosis can significantly impact a person’s quality of life, causing embarrassment, discomfort, and social anxiety. The two most common treatments for underarm sweat reduction are Botox injections and MiraDry.

MiraDry: MiraDry is a non-invasive procedure that uses microwave energy to target and eliminate sweat glands in the underarms. This treatment offers long-lasting or permanent results because it destroys the sweat glands, preventing future sweating. It is typically performed in one to two sessions, with minimal downtime.

Botox Injections: Botox (botulinum toxin) injections are a widely used treatment for hyperhidrosis. Botox works by blocking the signals from the nerves to the sweat glands, preventing the glands from producing sweat. The effect is temporary, and the treatment typically lasts for 4 to 6 months.

Indications:

Primary hyperhidrosis: Excessive sweating that occurs without any underlying medical condition, typically affecting the underarms, hands, feet, or face.
Secondary hyperhidrosis: Sweating that is caused by an underlying condition, such as an endocrine disorder, medication side effects, or anxiety. In some cases, treatments may still be beneficial even with secondary hyperhidrosis.
Excessive perspiration: For individuals who experience excessive underarm sweating (more than what is needed to cool the body), leading to staining of clothes, discomfort, and embarrassment.
Quality of life improvement: People who feel self-conscious about sweat stains, odour, or sweat-related social anxiety may seek underarm sweat reduction treatments to improve their confidence and comfort.

Contraindications:

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Both Botox and MiraDry are typically avoided during pregnancy or breastfeeding due to the lack of sufficient studies on their safety in these conditions.
Neuromuscular disorders: Individuals with conditions like myasthenia gravis or Lambert-Eaton syndrome, which affect neuromuscular function, should avoid Botox injections.
Skin infections or irritation: Botox and MiraDry should not be used on areas with active skin infections, cuts, or severe irritation.
Allergies to Botox: People who are allergic to botulinum toxin or have a history of allergic reactions to Botox should not undergo this treatment.
Certain medical conditions: If a person has any condition that affects the nervous system, sweat production, or the ability to heal, it’s important to discuss this with a healthcare provider before undergoing treatment.
Age restrictions: Botox is generally recommended for adults between the ages of 18 and 65, although it can be used in younger patients under certain circumstances. MiraDry is generally used in people aged 18 and older.

Aftercare:

Aftercare for underarm sweat reduction treatments varies depending on the method used (Botox or MiraDry). Below are the general aftercare instructions for each treatment:

1. Botox Injections

  • Avoid strenuous activity: For the first 24 hours after treatment, avoid heavy exercise or activities that cause excessive sweating. This will allow the Botox to settle and take effect.
  • Don’t rub the treated area: Avoid touching, rubbing, or massaging the treated area for at least 24 hours to prevent Botox from spreading to unintended areas.
  • Stay upright: For the first 4 hours after Botox injections, try to stay upright to prevent the Botox from moving away from the injection site.
  • No excessive heat: Avoid hot showers, saunas, or steam rooms for at least 24-48 hours after Botox treatment, as heat can cause the Botox to spread too quickly and lead to temporary weakness or drooping.
  • Cold compress: If there is mild swelling or redness after the procedure, you can apply a cool compress to the treated area to reduce discomfort.
  • Avoid deodorants or antiperspirants: It is generally advised to avoid using deodorants or antiperspirants on the treated area for 24 hours to prevent irritation.
  • Follow-up appointment: Schedule a follow-up visit (usually 2-3 weeks after treatment) to assess the results and determine if additional Botox injections are needed.

2. MiraDry

  • Avoid heat and sweating: For the first 48 hours after MiraDry treatment, avoid hot showers, saunas, or strenuous exercise to allow the treated area to heal.
  • Cool compress: Post-treatment swelling and discomfort are common. You can use a cold compress or ice pack (wrapped in a cloth) to the underarms to reduce swelling and ease pain.
  • Manage swelling and bruising: Some patients may experience swelling, bruising, or tenderness in the treated area, which usually resolves within a few days to a week. Over-the-counter pain relievers like paracetamol or ibuprofen can help manage discomfort.
  • Avoid tight clothing: Avoid wearing tight-fitting clothing or anything that could rub against the treated area for at least a few days to prevent irritation.
  • Limit physical activity: It’s recommended to refrain from vigorous physical activity or excessive sweating for about 1-2 weeks post-treatment.
  • Monitor for side effects: While side effects are rare, if you experience any unusual pain, numbness, or signs of infection, contact your provider.
